In the context of formal academic as well as cultural-practical discussions on cultural heritage, attempts to preserve, reconstruct and visualize the Jewish cultural heritage are a special challenge. A particularly complex example is the diaspora experiences of Jews and their effects on the construction of individual as well as communal Jewish identities that are both expressed in material as well as immaterial Jewish cultural heritage.

The conference will focus on: a) the link between the future goals regarding the preservation of material as well as immaterial Jewish cultural heritage undertaken by various research facilities, associations, municipalities and museums, etc. This focus includes an in-depth examination of related cultural policy interests, such as of UNESCO, which in 2003 agreed on the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and b) on the practical application of the concept of cultural sustainability within this context.
